Piazza Matteotti lost part of its identity after World War II due to demolitions that altered its original proportions and confused pedestrian and vehicular flows. Since it is not possible to rebuild the original structures, the project presented for the competition recovers historical layouts to restore the urban space’s proportions. Piazzetta Barnabò has been redesigned with ramps and stairways that connect the lower and upper parts of the square and separate pedestrian from vehicular areas. Green spaces are redefined, surrounding the square like a scenic backdrop. The project enhances the city’s history, multiplies collective spaces across different levels, and improves their quality and connections. Piazza Matteotti is transformed into a multifunctional public space suitable for events and markets. The roof of the underground shelter is permeable to light thanks to skylights, and colorful curtains inspired by Shingu’s work provide shade. The square, accessible to everybody, removes architectural barriers and integrates pathways for people with disabilities.
