The competition for the inclusion of social residential housing in the Bertalia Lazzaretto area and the partial reorganization of its masterplan represented an opportunity to face the housing challenges of the city of Bologna. The city, which is growing and experiencing rising housing costs, needs to respond to the increasing demand for homes, which includes not only economically vulnerable individuals but also students and workers with middle incomes. The Bertalia Lazzaretto area is intended to act as a connector between different zones: to the north, Bertalia; to the east, Lame; to the west, the Reno River; and to the south, the railway network. With the expansion of the metropolitan city, it is essential to develop peripheral and polycentric areas to provide attractive alternatives to the historic center. The project aims to offset the distance from the center with high-quality private, public, and semi-public spaces. A central park serves as the heart of the new area, promoting a lifestyle that integrates social interaction and sustainability, and seeks to create an appealing microcosm outside the center of Bologna.
